The readings have shaped my understanding of Digital Humanities as a dynamic and evolving field. At first, I did not have an idea as to what it may have been viewed as. Coming into this course with a blank understanding of what the topic entails. The emphasis on collaboration and open access in the Digital Humanities Manifesto is shown as a great example of how the information that we use throughout this course will be drawn from people all over the world. After doing the readings I can say that Digital Humanities is a field that merges the study of humanities disciplines with digital tools and methods. It involves using technology to enhance research, teaching, and dissemination of knowledge in areas like literature, history, art, and philosophy. I believe this because of all the information and data that we are being given throughout the texts. So far I can say that to my understanding digital humanities is not just using technology but rather getting a better feel for humanistic inquiry. It is also not limited to traditional humanities including traditional humanities topics, it also intersects with contemporary issues, such as digital culture and social media.
So far I can put together three main points as to what I understand digital humanities to incorporate. First interdisciplinary collaboration involves collaboration among scholars from various fields, including computer science, media studies, and traditional humanities disciplines. The second use of digital tools, employing digital technologies, such as data visualization, text mining, and digital archiving, to analyze and present humanities research. Lastly, accessibility and engagement seek to make scholarly work more accessible to a broader audience, often through online platforms and interactive media.
All in all, I would say that my initial thoughts on digital humanities have not changed due to the lack of awareness of the topic as a whole. I entered this class looking to broaden my knowledge of relationships and tendencies that humans have. After the first readings and the manifesto, I can say that the framework of the topic and what to expect has been laid down for me. I am excited to take a deep look at all aspects of humans.
"The emphasis on collaboration and open access in the Digital Humanities Manifesto is shown as a great example of how the information that we use throughout this course will be drawn from people all over the world." Yes, ideally! Although we're in a discipline (ENGL), we are an interdisciplinary group of scholars and will be learning from a variety of fields as well! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat post Robby. When I think of digital humanities, I think about how the internet and digital technology has rapidly changed to make the digital world easier to use. It seems as if there is so many different fields that all play a role together to strengthen the effectiveness of the technology being used. Imagine if you showed somebody from one hundred years ago, one of the virtual tours that you can take in a museum. For us we punch in a destination on our little screen, and we can get there, or we can just check it out from the comfort of our home. Back then people had to go above and beyond to be able to go and see artistic works and recreational things in the world. It goes to show that the digital world has connected us together so much in a way we never thought we would know. I can appreciate the technical work and skills that go into the digital humanities. Anyways nice explanation Robby, it definitely got me thinking in the right direction about this topic.
