Blog Post #7 (Curation Team Planning)
For my curation protect I am working on the Lewiston Maine Shooting with the Maine MILL. We are splitting up the work into two teams, one team who finds media and videos on the Lewiston Maine Shooting, and one team who finds text on the shooting. We need to then watch or read the information found and then add them to our excel sheet for the Maine MILL to use on there Lewiston Maine Shooting memorial page. We are working with information found online, and using excel, and google drive. Our overall goal is to give the Maine MILL all the information they need to start the memorial page on the Lewiston Maine Shooting. Personally me along with the other members of my team who are finding text, our role is to find good information and save it and add it to the excel sheet for the Maine MILL.
Our curation project will use some terms in digital humanities especially the terms found in chapter 2, of The Digital Humanities Coursebook by Johanna Drucker. One term in that chapter that relates to our project is data ethics, considering we are working with a very sensitive topic, and have to consider ethical concerns while finding our data. In chapter 2, it also talks about certain practices to collect data and one mentioned is using excel which we will be using in our project. The overall purpose of this project is to find information that will create a memorable memorial for the Lewiston Maine Shooting and its victims. The audience for this project could be many people, like families of victims, police officers, Maine residents or just about anyone around the world. The significance of this project is the overall impact it will have on its audience. This project will have lots of researching and digging to find materials and we will be taking those materials and putting them into a google drive, and excel sheet to preserve its data. Our project fits into the goals of our clients at the Maine MILL because it would help them find much needed data for their goal in preserving the memories of the victims of Lewiston Maine Shooting. We learned from our clients how to use excel and what they expect from us in that excel sheet, and we will meet their needs by finding and adding the best data possible for them to use for the memorial.
Hey Kira! I went through what you guys have found so far and think you have found some awesome articles on the Lewiston Maine Shooting. So far Josie, Julia, and I have only found about 4 videos. However, all of the videos we have found fit exactly into the topics that they wanted us to get. Some work for us to get done on the quantity portion, but the quality is definitely there so far. Although we have our group split into two, I think it can be really beneficial for our group as a whole to have check-ins to see how we can help others as we come closer to the deadline.
ReplyDeleteKira, the articles you and the rest of the print group have collected so far are very interesting and fit very well with what Maine Mill is looking for in terms of content. As I am part of the video group, I have been looking into clips, specifically late night show clips, that cover the shooting. As the anniversary approaches, I am sure more clips will be released as well. However, I want to focus mostly on clips from last year to grab the initial reaction of the public at the aftermath of the shooting.
ReplyDeleteKira, I appreciate your connections to Drucker and how our project is a very sensitive topic which means it is very important for us to consider ethical concerns within our data. The data that the print group has covered is all very fitting and include key bits of evolving information that will be useful for our curation. As part of the video team, the articles are helpful for a sense of direction and how we can connect print and video for the Lewiston Maine Shooting, along with searching for some of the specifics that they are looking for (like late night shows).
