Blog post 8: Curation team processing
While engaging in the Maine MILL project, I have taken the responsibility of being on the video team. We were instructed to search for videos surrounding the Lewiston Maine shooting, more specifically press conferences and late night show clips. We are all aiming to accumulate as much video footage that we could surrounding those specifics as well as additional news clips that stood out as important to include. This year is the first year that the team is requesting for video clips as a part of the curation so we have found it to be important to communicate and collaborate our ideas, questions, concerns as much as possible.
Comparing the amount of content between articles and images, there is much less video footage available which is one of the challenges that we have faced, especially trying to pull videos that pertain to their specific inquiries. The main thing that has changed for our group is that once we get all of our videos, we will need to transcribe them all. By transcribing the videos it will create for a more accessible format, especially for the deaf community which played a big role in this event.
In terms of Digital Humanities, we have been engaging in material that is sensitive which pertains to "ethical data". We were made aware through our meetings that the deaf community was largely impacted by the Lewiston Maine shooting. With this knowledge it is important for us to note the use of interpreters in press conference videos and make sure that we are providing ethical data pertaining to sensitivity of this certain group. As this topic has also just recently reached its one year mark, it is also important to take into account the new data that is being released and make sure that we are sticking with past stories. We also recognize the sensitivity that this brings and how it impacts our clients and their surrounding work with the Lewiston Maine shooting victims.
I am also working on the Maine MILL project, but I am working on the print team. On the print team, I have to gather articles, or other print materials. Then with these materials I have to process them by breaking down different aspects of them, then adding all those parts/aspects to an excel sheet for preservation. I also ensure that I download the articles, and the photos in the articles as pdfs to keep them preserved if the article or text was ever taken down. As you are in my group, I know we both add all of the materials found in the excel sheet for preservation and organization. Both on the print team, and the video team we have to consider the term "ethical data" within digital humanities. Just as you touched upon above this is due to the sensitivity of the topic, and how what we provide may affect the overall memorial created.
