Web presentation and design

Digital humanities can take on many forms for web presentation: collections, exhibits, and/or publications. Depending on the content, a certain presentation must be used as means to better access the content and create a more seamless experience for users. The textbook mentions a few web builder platforms, such as WordPress, Omeka, and Drupal. They recommend to "always follow the tutorial", "see what degree of customization is possible", and to look into the information regarding how the site will need to be updated, how you will interact with site users, and how security will be implemented (198). These are relevant tips for our MEdiation project, especially when keeping in mind we may want to keep this site active after the end of the class.

Chapter 12 also provides helpful insight for starting a project. It mentions to be aware of your "intellectual goals" and define early on in your project your intentions and materials necessary. Furthermore, it also emphasizes intellectual property use, such as adhering to copyright guidelines and using "Fair Use" media and creative commons.

For my MEdiataion project, I will be using Wix or Weebly to build my website. Using a combination of skills we have used from this semester, such as the integration of metadata, qualitative and quantitative data, and the use of my own images or Free Use intellectual properties, I believe that building the website will be smooth and easy. I am also excited to experiment with design as it adheres to usability and user experience. Looking at the websites on class on Thursday was very helpful in recognizes patterns in design that I can implement into my own website. I definitely want to make good use of white space, big headers, short / minimal text or little lengthy paragraphs, intriguing and stimulating visuals, and clarity into the purpose of the site at the beginning. I also am eager to make this website for my TBD major, including past essays and digital projects I have worked on in the past.

  1. It is great that you are focusing on both usability and user experience for your MEdiation project. The design elements that you intend to implement such as white space, clear headers, and engaging visuals will really help enhance user interaction with your site. You might also want to consider the scalability of your project especially if you plan to continue it after the class ends. For this, you will need to make sure that the platform you choose (Wix or Weebly) can handle future updates and changes.

  2. I appreciate how you brought up having goals before you start a project. This is a method I definitely want to implement in my project, as I know it will help me have a more strategic approach and purpose for my creation. I also agree that this class has built a great foundation for moving into building a digital humanities project of our own. I can see myself using Weebly as well, because I generally liked how it was set up and how our model website turned out.
